Good morning everyone!
Many of us often visit other teachers' blogs to get some inspiration. Here are two blogs that you may enjoy too. Learning and Sharing with Ms. Lirenman belongs to a Grade 1 teacher in Surrey. Keep in mind that this teacher has access to iPads all day as it is a 1:1 classroom. Tales of a 6th Grade Classroom was recommended by Ms. Daly during one of our inquiry mornings. It is, like the first blog, full of great ideas. I haven't spent a lot of time reading it but plan on doing so during the break. Her blog post, Integrating Tech: Debate and Persuasive Writing has convinced me to do so. We hope you enjoy the reading! If you come across some blogs you like, don't hesitate to share them with us so we can feature them here. Annie Here's a great intro video you can share with your class when discussing Digital Footprint.
The video was found on this site, which is a great starter if you're wondering what to teach and how to do it. Teaching email etiquette to our students is a fun activity to do.
Here's something that may inspire a few of you. Common Sense Media: Teaching Email Etiquette Creating a footprint allows you to put a request in when something on your computer or on the school iPads doesn't work. We recommend that you ask one of the tech committee members or an administrator first to ensure it isn't something that can be fixed at the school level. If nothing can be done, then it's time for you to create a footprint. Here are the steps: 1) Go to the VSB site. Click on the Staff tab. This is what you'll see. 2) Click on Service Desk. 3) Log in using your username and password. This is what you'll get. 4) Once you've logged in, you'll end up on the following page. 5) Select Submit Request. It's at the top of your screen. 6) Fill in the required information. You'll need to enter the following: -problem description (in the title) -problem detail (give as much info as possible) -school code (there's a list for you) -room number (so that they can find you or your computer) -make (there's a list for you... Acer, Apple, Canon, Dell, HP, IBM, etc.) There is also some additional info you may need to enter. If you're not sure what to write, try your best. That's usually how we've done it in the past and it has worked for us. 7) Click on the Save button. Don't forget that step! And log out! 8) Be prepared to wait. If it feels like it's taking a really long time and you're starting to wonder what may have happened, log in again so that you can view your request. You'll be able to quickly see what's going on. You'll need to click on View Mine to view your previous requests. It's at the top of the screen after logging in. It will look like this. If a request is still on hold, it will say Open. As you can see on this picture, a request was put in on January 16. It's still open. This is normal.
If you need additional info, do not create a new footprint. If you want to communicate with someone from the IT department, all you need to do is reply to the confirmation email you received after creating your footprint. We hope this helps! Come see one of us if you have additional questions. We're there to help! The tech committee has met many times to put together a Tech plan for our school, (see below), and at this week's upcoming staff meeting we will be sharing some projects using the content creation apps on our iPads. We realize there is limited time at this upcoming meeting to have lengthy discussions around technology, so this is just a sharing session and we will be bringing recommendations to the staff within the next few weeks.
To date we have 47 iPads… 10 with Resource Teachers (English and French) 13 for Intermediate class use (with Ms. Persoon) 8 for Primary class use (with Ms. Quon) 8 for library/project teacher/school use (with Ms. Hong) 8 with individual staff in the "pilot group" The Plan 1st Priority -Primary Building: to get a cart with laptop, projector and necessary cables/dongles (as they do not have any of these) **this has since been completed 2nd Priority (1) purchase 30 more iPads (minis) as well as 40 cases for the iPads **20 of these 30 iPads have been received and are part of our present 47 iPad collection. (2) purchase 3 additional projectors and necessary cables/dongles (3) distribute iPads to "pilot group", one per person (those who responded to the survey conducted at the end of Dec. – this has been done) -this is a temporary loan with the hopes that these people will experiment with the content creation apps on the iPads, teach digital citizenship with their students, share their experiences at our "digital cafe" in June and return the iPads in June; a personal responsibility agreement will be given out along with these loaned iPads Priority # 3 -purchase apps for new iPads |
